About the Role

A leading European grid-scale battery energy storage (BESS) developer, owner, and operator, backed by long-term institutional investors. The company is a recognised frontrunner in high-voltage connected energy storage, with multiple operational and under-construction assets and a GW-scale development pipeline across Belgium and beyond. With plans for international expansion and diversification into behind-the-meter solutions, the business is entering its next phase of growth.

The Senior Technical BESS Expert / Engineering Manager is a senior-level technical leadership role responsible for defining, delivering, and optimising the electrical and battery technology aspects of large-scale BESS projects.

Reporting to the Head of Assets & Engineering, you will act as the technical authority for BESS technology and electrical systems, leading design decisions, vendor engagement, performance optimisation, and lifecycle engineering across development, construction, commissioning, and operations.

This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with strategic oversight of technology selection, supplier qualification, and long-term asset performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead BESS electrical design and technical specifications during tender preparation, evaluation, and contracting.
  • Act as the primary technical interface with BESS vendors and integrators throughout tendering, construction, commissioning, and operations.
  • Perform and review engineering design across multiple grid-scale BESS projects, ensuring compliance with Belgian regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Optimise solutions for performance, lifetime cost efficiency, fire safety, constructability, and maintainability.
  • Coordinate internal multidisciplinary teams (electrical, development, procurement, construction, HSE).
  • Interface with EPC contractors, Owner’s Engineers, consultants, architects, permitting authorities, and grid operators.
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise on BESS technology evolution, electrical equipment innovations, and market trends.
  • Support procurement strategy through technical qualification and benchmarking of BESS suppliers and technologies.
  • Oversee electrical engineering deliverables, including:
    • HV / MV substations
    • LV distribution systems
    • Power system studies
    • Protection coordination
    • Cabling, earthing & lightning protection
  • Act as BESS & Electrical Lead during construction, representing the company at FAT, SAT, and key site milestones.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including site inspections and factory visits.
  • Ensure design documentation, technical reviews, and as-built records meet internal and regulatory standards.
  • Support asset management activities including battery degradation modelling, performance reporting, KPIs, and condition assessments.
  • Analyse technical and commercial performance data to support warranty management and strategic decision-making.

Your Profile

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years’ experience in engineering roles within energy, renewables, or power infrastructure, ideally BESS.
  • Proven hands-on experience delivering multiple complex grid-scale BESS projects from an owner’s engineer or project engineering perspective.
  • Deep technical knowledge of battery technologies, power electronics, and electrical balance-of-plant systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical design options, performance optimisation, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Experience with industrial control systems and SCADA is a strong advantage.
  • Familiarity with Belgian and European electrical, energy storage, and grid codes & standards.
  • Professional working proficiency in English; French and/or Dutch are strong advantages.

Personal Attributes

  • Highly analytical and solution-oriented problem solver.
  • Hands-on, pragmatic, and delivery-focused.
  • Self-starter with a “whatever-it-takes” mindset.
  • Collaborative team player with strong stakeholder management skills.
  • Passionate about energy transition and battery technologies.
