About the Role

A leading European engineering and technology business specialising in power system design, grid automation, and substation engineering for high-voltage infrastructure projects. The company supports the transformation of Europe’s energy networks, delivering sustainable, reliable, and digitally integrated power solutions across the transmission and distribution sectors.

We are seeking a Protection & Control Design Engineer to join our Power Systems Engineering department. The successful candidate will take ownership of secondary system design for high-voltage substations and grid connection projects, ensuring reliable and compliant power system performance.

You will be involved across all project phases — from concept and detailed design to testing and commissioning — and will work closely with cross-border engineering teams on major European grid modernisation and automation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop secondary systems for HV substations and grid connection projects.
  • Prepare and interpret schematic, wiring, and interconnection diagrams.
  • Develop control, automation, and protection configurations for high-voltage applications.
  • Use EPLAN for schematic design and AutoCAD for layout drawings of panels and cabinets.
  • Create and review signal line diagrams, protection logic, and documentation in Visio.
  • Conduct AC/DC system studies and calculations using ETAP or equivalent tools.
  • Support testing, FAT, and commissioning across European projects.
  • Ensure design compliance with European and UK engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, including primary design, systems, and commissioning engineers.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years’ experience in secondary design engineering for HV substations or grid projects.
  • Proven expertise in protection, control, and automation system design.
  • Experience working on transmission and distribution infrastructure projects.
  • European project exposure essential; UK project experience advantageous.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage design deliverables in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.

Technical Skills

  • EPLAN (schematic design)
  • AutoCAD (layout and panel design)
  • Microsoft Visio (signal and control diagrams)
  • ETAP or equivalent (system studies)
