About the Role

We are working with a specialist consultancy in the energy sector with deep expertise in electricity networks, distributed energy resources, HVDC systems, protection & control, and power market advisory.

Out client has supported utilities, grid operators, and renewable energy developers across the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and North America. Their work spans network studies, modelling and simulations, technical due diligence, detailed design, and project delivery — all with a focus on enabling the global energy transition.

They are now seeking an HV Cable Systems Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of high-voltage underground cable projects up to 400 kV.
This is a fully remote position, to work on a 12-month contract basis. Open to candidates based anywhere in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver design work for HVAC and HVDC underground cable systems up to 400 kV under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Prepare design documentation, including cable sizing, ampacity, short-circuit withstand, TMF, and sheath voltage calculations.
• Develop specifications for cables, accessories, and route design.
• Carry out technical studies and ensure compliance with relevant standards, CDM regulations, and company procedures.
• Work collaboratively with civil, structural, and protection teams to ensure cohesive project delivery.
• Contribute to tendering, estimation, and design input during project development stages.
• Participate in design reviews and quality checks of deliverables.
• Support continuous improvement in design processes, tools, and technical documentation

Required Skills

• Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical or Power Engineering.
• 3–8 years’ experience in HV/EHV cable system design within consultancy, utility, or EPC environments.
• Solid technical understanding of underground cable systems for both HVAC and HVDC applications.
• Hands-on experience using CYMCAP for thermal rating studies; familiarity with tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, or PSCAD is advantageous.
• Knowledge of UK transmission and distribution standards and specifications (National Grid, DNOs, OFGEM).
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering environment and communicate clearly with colleagues and clients.
• Detail-oriented, proactive, and committed to delivering high-quality technical outputs.
• Must be based in the UK
